Great Candidates for a Hair Transplant

There are many factors that determine who is a good candidate.

You might think that anyone who has experienced hair loss or hair thinning would be good candidates for a hair transplant, but that is not the case.  There are certain instances where the procedure would be a waste of their money and result in disappointment.  Our private surgery centre in Yorkville offers the state-of-the-art FUE (follicular unit extraction) NeoGraft method of hair restoration, and we are excited about the results it offers.  Even with this state-of-the-art technology, there are some people who are better candidates than others.

Determining Factor

Who Is A Good Candidate?

Sex – Men usually experience localized hair loss, known as male pattern baldness.  It is much easier for the doctor to place grafts in correct locations on the scalp because the bald areas are obvious.  Women, on the other hand, usually experience thinning throughout the head.  It isn’t as easy to know which areas to target with the grafts.  Occasionally, women also have localized thinning, which makes them much better candidates for hair transplants.

Age – Men who are just beginning to lose hair are not the best candidates, as the hair loss usually continues for several years.  If grafts are placed too early, there is a possibility of incorrect distribution on the head.  Men should seek transplants after they have experienced hair loss for more than 5 years and the balding has ceased.

Extent of hair loss – If there is an established area of hair loss, it is much easier for the doctor to place grafts in the correct area.

Scalp laxity – Hair can be removed from the donor area of the head more easily if the scalp is loose rather than tight.

More Factors

Density – The number of hairs per unit of surface area determines a person’s hair density.  A higher density means that there is more hair available to be transplanted.  If hair on the donor area of the scalp is already thin, there is not much hair to cultivate.

Type – Hair that is thicker and coarser produces better results for hair transplants.  Wavy hair is an asset, as it is more dense in appearance than straight hair.

Race – Typically, Asians have straight hair with less density.  Blacks have the advantage due to their coarse, curly hair.  Caucasians have many different hair types, but the best results are produced for people with thicker, coarse hair.

Colour – Hair transplants are more successful when the skin colour of the scalp is similar to the hair colour.  This disguises any thin areas as the hair follicles begin to grow.

Trauma – People who have experienced stress or trauma are good candidates for NeoGraft hair transplant once the hair loss has subsided completely.

Burns – *Hair transplants have proven to be an excellent way to restore hair growth for burn patients once their scalps have completely healed.* Booking an appointment with Dr. Torgerson to discuss whether you are a good candidate is the first place to start.  He will be able to discuss your needs and examine your scalp to determine whether a FUE NeoGraft hair transplant is an exciting option for you.
