Naturally Gorgeous

Lip Filler

Dermal filler for lips is in demand, but the expert enhancement techniques and formulas designed for this sultry facial feature have modernized in many ways. Ultra-natural lip filler is often requested at Dr. Cory Torgerson’s downtown Toronto cosmetic clinic.

Studies have found that balance, rather than lip size, is what defines the “attractiveness” of lips for most people. While universally fixed guidelines for ideal lip proportions do not exist, experienced injectors consider multiple components and characteristics of your mouth when improving its overall appearance. When a lip filler treatment is not simply focused on size, the harmonious, aesthetically pleasing before and after results show off the sexy, feminine, or confident look you want without “puffiness.”

The fundamental rule of quality over quantity certainly applies to lip filler.

Dr. Cory Torgerson is a Toronto lip filler expert who teaches other surgeons, doctors, and nurses how to use dermal filler products strategically, keeping whole-face balance and beauty in mind.

His Toronto cosmetic clinic carries only top-of-the-line, Health Canada-approved lip fillers. There have been incredible innovations in the longevity, feel, and movement of filler products. Dr. Torgerson’s patients now choose from gold-standard lip fillers such as Juvéderm, Restylane, Teosyal Global, and Teosyal Kiss. All of our fillers are made of HA (hyaluronic acid), which is 100% natural and has an excellent medical safety record.

Are you like many people who feel a little uncertain or nervous about lip filler ingredients or worry that you can’t have lip filler that still feels soft, kissable, and totally natural?

How Is Lip Filler Done?

Lip augmentation means enhancing and adding volume to the lips. Contrary to a common misconception, lip injections are not Botox for the lips. Dermal filler works differently than Botox, because it allows your injector to add soft volume to a tissue area with hyaluronic acid gel. Neuromodulators like Botox or Dysport are designed to minimize muscle movement where they are injected, which smooths wrinkles.

Injectable filler can also be placed alongside the mouth where deep laugh lines form. Or it can be injected above the upper lip where vertical smoker’s lines contribute to an aged appearance and wreak havoc on lipstick.

The majority of lip fillers in Toronto are made of hyaluronic acid. HA is a naturally moisturizing substance found nearly everywhere in the body, and it is formulated to hold a gel consistency, keeping it in place where injected.

Our clinic uses only hyaluronic acid fillers, not collagen, silicone, or any semi-permanent products. HA fillers can enhance the look of your lips by adding shape, structure, and volume. They can also smooth unwanted lines, camouflage scars, or reduce a gummy smile.

Is Lip Filler the Best Option for You?

Our doctors and nurses are some of the top injectors in Toronto. When you visit for your consultation, listening and asking you questions help them discover more about your goals and your style. They also examine your lips and explain how lip filler can accent or minimize a feature and enhance your look.

One of the perks of HA dermal filler is that its effects can be seen right away, so as volume is added, you and your injector will be able to gradually contour your lips the way you want. Even when patients want a big-impact lip augmentation, we recommend adding filler in stages, over time, so that the product can incorporate naturally, and so that soft movement and harmonious mouth shape are maintained. A little product often goes a long way in the lips, so you may want to try a little . . . then visit again for top-ups and touch-ups.

Another positive feature of HA is that it can be dissolved with a substance called hyaluronidase. In some cases, patients have received a lip filler overload at another clinic, and they want to look more like themselves again. Or they decide that filler is not for them after trying it. Few cosmetic treatments can be reversed or erased, but HA can actually be dissolved in the rare cases where that is needed. So if you’re feeling nervous about your first flight, rest assured that there is an eject button! Luckily, most lip filler patients are ecstatic with their results and are very satisfied with the positive effect that a prettier pout has on their whole face.

You might inquire about a surgical lip lift if a more youthful, elevated, and outwardly turned upper lip is what you are interested in. Dr. Torgerson performs highly satisfying, subtle lip lift procedures regularly and will be happy to discuss the potential benefits for you.

How Long Does Lip Filler Last?

In our Toronto Facial Cosmetic Clinic, patients can choose from the following injectable fillers, specifically formulated for lip augmentation: Restylane, Teosyal Global, Teosyal Kiss, and Juvéderm. Each lip filler has its own unique qualities that could make it the best choice for you. All of them are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a safe and naturally occurring substance already found in your body. A hyaluronic acid injectable filler carries minimal risk and has a fantastic safety record.

Lip filler can last anywhere from 6 months to 12 months. Typically, dermal filler in the lips is metabolized faster than in other areas of the face. This is because our lips are constantly in motion – eating, drinking, and speaking – which means that the gel can be broken down and absorbed more quickly. Please see our Dermal Filler page to learn about which dermal fillers are longer lasting.

In general, most patients return for maintenance before the product completely disappears to keep results consistent. Because HA filler tends to stimulate collagen production where it is placed, you may find that with each maintenance visit, you require less product to maintain a look you love.

What Does Lip Filler Treatment Feel Like?

When you visit us for your first lip-plumping appointment, you meet with your injector privately to discuss the treatment, create a plan, and review any related risks. When you decide to proceed, you may have topical numbing cream applied to your lips to help keep you comfortable. However, all fillers that we use for lip augmentation contain lidocaine. It is a freezing agent that takes effect very quickly, so after the first needle prick, most people do not experience pain.

After injection, the results are instantly visible. The lips are sensitive, so you might see swelling for a day or two. You will be reassured that results settle in the days following treatment, and you might need to be patient. Ice packs can be applied to help soothe your lips. Your whole appointment from start to finish may take as little as 20 to 30 minutes, and patients can resume their normal activities on the same day.

Lip Filler Recovery

Lip filler is a very popular procedure here at our Toronto clinic, so we think it’s important that our patients know what to expect following their lip injections and how best to recover. The following are some guidelines and tips that will help your recovery from lip filler go smoothly: You can expect some swelling and redness following your lip augmentation. This can take anywhere from 1 day to 2 weeks to subside and is completely normal. We recommend that you refrain from strenuous exercise for 48 hours following the procedure, since intense exercise may cause trauma to your lips. It’s best not to lie down for a few hours following lip injections and keep your head elevated when going to bed to increase blood flow and minimize swelling. Use ice for no longer than 10-minute intervals on your lips for about 3 to 4 hours following your lip filler procedure, although icing is optional and can be done at your discretion. Taking a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory medication is recommended if you find you need a pain reliever post lip-injection. Ibuprofen is a good suggestion.

Lastly, in the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid eating foods that require excessive chewing, as this may contribute to increased pain and swelling. Generally speaking, most patients find they can return immediately to their usual daily activities following lip injections, and they find any side effects of the lip augmentation completely manageable and a non-issue.
