Why is Chin Augmentation Recommended?

Facial plastic surgeons agree that both a rhinoplasty and/or a chin implant can create some of the most profound and dramatic changes in a person’s appearance.

Because the chin is the foundation on which all other facial features rest, it determines the facial symmetry and balance for the entire face. For example, if a person has a weak chin, it can result in their nose looking too large and out of proportion. After receiving chin implant surgery, that same nose may appear in perfect balance as a central feature. A pointed chin that projects too far can make a person look older than they are and make all other features appear to be receding. After a properly sized chin is inserted, facial symmetry is achieved, and features no longer appear receded. This results in a better, more balanced overall appearance.

Genioplasty Surgery

Chin implants are able to provide people with a better profile where their silhouette is perfectly balanced. Cosmetic surgeons use 2 methods to achieve a chin implant. Genioplasty surgery uses a person’s own bone to create the implant, and mentoplasty uses a pre-formed implant, usually made of silicone or Gore-Tex material. Mentoplasty surgery has become the most common method, because pre-made implants cause less infection and are a less intense surgery than using a patient’s own bone.

Dr. Torgerson prefers to use Gore-Tex Medpor implants when performing surgery at his private surgical facility in Yorkville, Toronto. He has had the most success using these implants, because they are slightly flexible but extremely strong. Gore-Tex is porous, which enables the patient’s own muscle tissue to incorporate right into the implant. This reduces the risk of movement.

Chin implant surgery can be accomplished in approximately 90 minutes using local anaesthetic with sedation. Dr. Torgerson places an incision just under the chin so that it will be inconspicuous after it has healed. He prescribes pain medication and antibiotics to guard against infection. A chin strap is worn for approximately 5 days to help reduce swelling and to ensure that the implant stays in place as it integrates with the muscle. Even after the strap is removed, there is a possibility of swelling for up to 6 weeks’ time. A liquid diet with minimal chewing is recommended for several days after the surgery. It is also normal for clients to feel tightness in the chin area and numbness in their lower lip for a few weeks.
