Upper Blepharoplasty – Upper Eyelid Surgery

When the skin on the upper eyelids begins to sag or droop, it can make a person appear old and even tired.

In extreme cases, these sagging lids can even interfere with a person’s vision. A solution to help restore a youthful appearance is upper eyelid surgery, also known as Upper Blepharoplasty. During the procedure, excess skin, fat, or even muscle is removed to give the eyelid that perfect shape. Since each person is different, Dr. Torgerson will have to first do an assessment, after which he will discuss with you in more detail what he recommends.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR THIS PROCEDURE?

Most adults who are in good health but have concerns about drooping or sagging eyelids are good candidates for this procedure.

It is also important for patients to have realistic expectations. While this type of surgery can dramatically improve the patient’s appearance, it is a temporary solution. Since the skin around the upper eyelids will continue to age, it may be necessary to repeat the procedure at some point in the future.

During your consultation, it is important to be completely honest about your medical history and conditions, since some conditions such as diabetes, smoking, and problems with dry eye can increase risks associated with the procedure.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE UPPER EYELID SURGERY?

Upper Blepharoplasty is a very simple surgery, but just like any other surgery, if certain precautions are taken pre- and post-surgery, it can help give you a much speedier recovery.

During the upper eyelid surgery, the surgeon will first mark the area around your eyelids carefully. Next he will make an incision in the natural eyelid’s folds, which are in the crease of your upper eyelids. He will then remove excess skin, fat, or a muscle to restore the eyelid to a more youthful-looking shape.

preparation for the surgery

Yes. Once you have booked Upper blepharoplasty with Dr. Torgerson at his Toronto Surgery Centre, you will be given a comprehensive package that explains in detail everything you should prepare beforehand. Some of the basics that Dr. Torgerson recommends you do before undergoing the surgery are as follows:

Get your medical check-up done before the surgery to avoid any potential risks during the surgery.

Have a blood test taken and a chest x-ray to ensure that you are healthy enough to proceed with plastic surgery.

Advise your surgeon of any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are taking, as it is possible that some of these could interact with medication that Dr. Torgerson prescribes or even negatively affect your bleeding during the surgery.

Stop taking any blood-thinning medication a week or two in advance of the surgery.

Eat only light meals the evening before the surgery.

Do not eat or drink after midnight.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER THE PROCEDURE

As with any surgical procedure, there will be a necessary period of time for healing, during which you should get plenty of rest and not engage in strenuous activity. Some of the normal effects of the surgery include:

Mild swelling

Dryness of eyes

Slight sensitivity to light

Temporary difficulty opening and closing eyelids

Minor discomfort

You should not smoke for at least a few weeks following the procedure, as it can delay healing.

These symptoms typically last a week or so. Once the eyelids have healed, the patient will notice a marked improvement in their appearance. With eyelids that are no longer sagging, their whole face will appear brighter and more alert and youthful.
