Chin Augmentation Toronto

Cleft Chin? These Toronto Chin Augmentation Techniques Suit All Kinds of Patients

A dimple or cleft in the middle of one’s chin was once considered almost universally to be a charming characteristic. These days, not everyone born with this quirk is a fan of it, and some would like to soften it or remove it for a more uniform, smooth-looking chin. If the lower jaw is also a little recessed or underdeveloped, patients may opt for chin augmentation in Toronto and smooth out the cleft while they’re at it. These procedures are more common for both men and women than you might think.

The numerous options for achieving these aesthetic changes are almost as varied as people are. You can choose surgical or non-surgical solutions for a cleft chin, and we’ll highlight a few of those chin augmentation techniques below.

Chin Augmentation

What is a cleft chin?

A cleft chin has a Y-shaped indent in the middle. There is technically a difference between cleft and dimpled chins in that underlying bone structure leads to the cleft, and it is more pronounced than a dimple. This is typically a genetic facial characteristic, so if your parents or grandparents had the trait, you’ve got a good chance of inheriting it. The formation of a chin cleft begins while you are growing in the womb, and it relates to the incomplete fusion of the chin bone or the mentalis muscles being further apart than usual. These muscles may be overly robust and developed as well. Depending on the underlying reasons for this feature, the solutions advised will differ.

Toronto Chin Augmentation with Fillers

This is often considered the fastest, easiest, and most instantly effective option to minimize a cleft or dimple in the chin. Hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane are brilliantly effective for filling in lines and hollows on the face.

The gel is made from a sugar derivative naturally found all over your body’s tissues. HA is hydrophilic, meaning it loves water and draws moisture to itself. When created in a lab for injection, HA molecules are cross-linked to encourage them to hold together and maintain shape. Various consistencies of gel are available and suit different aesthetic purposes. The fluid is absorbed harmlessly into your system over time, and each treatment lasts between 6 and 12 months, depending on the area and your metabolism of the product.

Dermal fillers have the distinction of being the fastest, easiest way to create contour and volume changes under the skin’s surface. Benefits include the lower price compared with surgery, the instant results, and minimal downtime. After a chin injection, mild soreness and possible bruising are the only recovery concerns. The fact that results are temporary can be viewed as a plus or a drawback, depending on how you look at it. Many people start with this treatment to see what the change will look like and then adjust to it before considering permanent options.

Dimple or Cleft

How does filler erase a dimple or cleft?

At our clinic in downtown Toronto, chin augmentation with filler requires only a fast, 30-minute appointment. Dr. Cory Torgerson is an expert facial surgeon and injector whose artistry and immense experience allow him to customize personalized and completely natural-looking results for each client.

When placed under the cleft or dimple, the filler raises the surface from underneath and creates a soft but resilient support or base where a hollow had been. You can watch as the dent disappears before your eyes. You and your surgeon will decide together exactly how much adjustment meets your goals and delivers a look you’re happy with.

One of the best things about HA is that it can also be dissolved very quickly in the rare case that that’s desired. Hyaluronidase breaks down the cohesive bonds in the gel and allows the liquid to be absorbed by the body within 12 hours, so many patients feel additional peace of mind knowing that the results of the filler are not permanent.

After Toronto Chin Filler Treatment

As mentioned, the results will last roughly 1 year or less, so this is not a long-term solution. Your chin area may feel a little firm or sensitive for 3 to 5 days following injection as natural inflammation resolves. The product will soften and integrate into the tissue and will feel completely natural within a week. There are few side effects possible with this treatment, which makes it a favourite for doctors and patients. However, your physician will discuss any potential risks and drawbacks with you.

Tip* One consideration is that repeat injection treatments over many years will add up in cost, so if the result is one you like, you may want to discuss a permanent, surgical enhancement that carries a higher, one-time fee.

Surgical Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation may involve an implant or an adjustment to the bone and muscles directly. Depending on the specific nature of a person’s cleft, the facial cosmetic surgeon will make a recommendation designed to suit their needs.

The results of cosmetic surgery are permanent, so this can be considered a clear advantage once the correct procedure has been selected.

Botox Injection

Neuromodulators such as Botox Cosmetic and Dysport are useful to relax unwanted muscle contraction. Their effects are temporary as well, lasting between 4 and 5 months in most cases. The solution is injected in micro-doses directly to the muscle. Within a few days, the nerve impulses triggering contraction will decrease.

Skilled physicians know how to target specific muscles and the directions of pull so that they can reduce one and not affect others. In the case of a strong mentalis muscle group that creates a dimple or cleft, injection with Botox can temporarily diminish or resolve it.

Bone Shaving
The surgeon can remove subtle amounts of bone surrounding the cleft to reduce the severity of it. This works well for a patient who has a larger, prominent chin bone and can afford to lose a couple millimetres. Likewise, mentalis muscle tissue can be reduced or moved to minimize its action.
Chin Implants
A customized piece of hard, bone-like material shaped to fit within the cleft is surgically implanted under the muscle and skin, against the existing chin. This fills in and rounds out the contour permanently.

Let’s compare the two most popular options for chin augmentation in Toronto – surgical implants vs. fillers.

Chin implants are often inserted along with other facial procedures such as rhinoplasty or jaw or neck surgery. The overall balance of features often benefits from strengthening and defining the chin. Dr. Torgerson will assess you and discuss your goals in detail during the consultation. If it is decided that an implant will be the most effective way to improve your chin, he’ll custom-tailor a plan using the optimal implant material and dimensions for you. Implantech and Surgiform provide excellent facial implants, and we also use silicone or ePTFE materials designed to allow controlled tissue integration. This material fuses with your living tissue and reduces the risks of fibrotic capsules or unstable results.

Chin augmentation will be performed in our luxurious level 3 OHP (Out-of-Hospital Premises) surgical centre under general anaesthetic. The entire process usually takes less than an hour, and you’ll be able to go home soon after.

The incisions used for chin surgery are virtually invisible, as they can be placed under the chin or inside the mouth. Sutures are removed in 5 days, and bruising or swelling are usually very minimal. Patients typically find that they can return to work and regular activities 5 days to 7 days after their chin implant surgery.

The cost of surgical chin augmentation in Toronto is roughly $6,000 plus taxes. (Note that this price is subject to change over time.) Though this is a higher one-time cost than filler, we’re pleased to provide medical financing, which helps make payment more convenient for many people.

Dermal filler for Chin Augmentation
When patients aren’t ready for cosmetic surgery or they want to see a temporary adjustment first, Dr. Torgerson often recommends injectable fillers to reduce a cleft chin. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural product, and it leaves no scars. Patients can see a smooth chin profile instantly using a safe, temporary in-office treatment.

A variety of HA gels can be selected, depending on the depth of injection and the strength needed. Juvéderm Ultra Plus, Voluma, and a few others are designed to be placed deep near the bone and will last the longest.

The treatment is performed while you sit comfortably in a spa chair. You can have a little topical freezing to numb the injection area, and then the product will be placed with a fine needle. The gel has anaesthetic within it, so it quickly freezes the local tissue, and patients report feeling minimal discomfort.

The cost for filler is usually priced per syringe and may range from $700 to $1,000 per ml (prices are subject to change with time). However, the amount that you’ll require to see desired results depends entirely on your unique situation and your discussion with your injector. You can choose to add the amount you are comfortable with.

If you’re unhappy with the look of your chin and you’d like a change, but you’re not sure where to start, we welcome you to contact Dr. Cory Torgerson for a consultation. He’ll be happy to listen to your concerns and share options with so that you can make the right choice and start feeling better about your appearance.
