Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin

Anyone familiar with facial cosmetic procedures knows what Botox is and what it can accomplish.

This “muscle-relaxing” injectable was the first product of its kind available in North America, so it is no surprise that is has dominated the market. Botox was approved for use 25 years ago and became wildly popular because it was non-invasive, produced rapid results, and was affordable for most people.

Surprisingly, Botox had no competition for many years, but 2 other muscl- relaxing injectables were approved for use in Canada in recent years. Dysport and Xeomin have been used for many years in Europe to treat neuromuscular conditions and were thereafter approved in Canada and the U.S. These neuromodulators are now available at plastic surgery clinics and dermatologist offices across the country. Botox is distributed by Allergan, Dysport by Galderma, and Xeomin by Merz Pharma.

Safe And Effective Muscle Relaxants

Gradual Onset

All 3 of these products are derived from botulinum toxin type A, which is a type of protein. They relax the muscles they are injected into by blocking the signals the nerves send to that muscle. With the use of very tiny needles, the substance is injected into the forehead, glabellar wrinkles (the lines between the eyebrows), and crow’s feet around the eyes. After a few days, the product takes effect, smoothing out the skin and literally removing the wrinkle. This is called gradual onset.

Unfortunately, the wrinkles do return, and the product needs to be injected again to maintain a smooth appearance. No matter which of the 3 products are used, the client may experience mild side effects like tightness of skin, a slight headache, or tiny pink bumps on the skin where the needle was injected. Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are all safe and effective muscle relaxants.

Although there are a lot of similarities in the 3 products, there are several differences as well.

Botox and Dysport both require refrigeration, whereas Xeomin requires none

Botox and Xeomin have the same sized molecules, which makes their unit size comparable. Dysport contains smaller molecules, so its unit size differs significantly. Basically, 50 units of Dysport equals 20 units of Botox. This has created competition for Botox in the pricing arena, and Dysport remains the cheapest of the 3 injectables, yet just as effective.

Dysport, Xeomin, Botox

One huge advantage with Dysport is that is has the shortest onset period of just 1 to 2 days. Botox is 3 to 4 days, and Xeomin requires a week to see its full effect.

Xeomin can boast that it has absolutely no additives, but it has less proteins around each active molecule as well. This has resulted in it having less “staying power” than Dysport or Botox. Our doctors do not offer Xeomin at our facial cosmetic clinic at this time.

Most clients agree that Botox injections last 3 to 5 months, while Dysport injections last 4 to 6 months. Because of the shorter onset period and the longer lasting results, Dysport has become a fierce competitor with Botox in just a few years.

Although muscle relaxant neuromodulators are now offered at aesthetic salons, our doctors recommend that patients choose a licensed facial cosmetic surgeon or a trained registered nurse to administer the injections to avoid complications. Training is necessary to inject the correct layer of skin tissue and to administer the correct amount of product. You will never regret booking your injectable appointments at our state-of-the-art facial cosmetic centre in downtown Toronto, where our doctors offer the highest level of service by injecting clients themselves.
