SmartGraft (FUE) vs. ARTAS Robotic (R-FUE)
It is always exciting to see technology advance as it offers new innovations and efficiency. When considering ARTAS vs. SmartGraft, ARTAS requires multiple tools and instruments, as most surgeries do.
Both the SmartGraft and the ARTAS robot also use the latest technology in follicular unit extraction (FUE). However, compared to SmartGraft, the ARTAS process is not very efficient. On the market today, SmartGraft is the most successful FUE device and is known as the best solution for hair restoration, as it delivers fast and positive results.
The Differences Between ARTAS and SmartGraft
The ARTAS System
ARTAS, also known as R-FUE, is an automated robot and has been on the market since only 2011, but it possesses several disadvantages that are overlooked. Currently, the ARTAS system is available with only a 1-mm punch extraction needle, which is larger than the typical .7-mm to .9-mm punches used by many FUE hair transplant surgeons. Using larger punches can increase the risk of visible scarring and may reduce the quantity of donor hair available for extraction.
Although the ARTAS robotic procedure offers an automated system, the SmartGraft is significantly more precise in extracting follicular units from the donor area. Although the ARTAS robot does carry value, it cannot replace the expert skills and knowledge of an experienced hair transplant professional. Now imagine getting a haircut . . . Would you rather get a haircut from a barber who has 10+ years of experience or from a robot? This is where skills and experience prevail over the newer technology. With an experienced surgeon, you can expect a survival rate of 97% to 94%, while the ARTAS robot has a survivability percentage of approximately 90%. Both methods can produce amazing results. However, you should take the time to understand the differences between the two.
Hair Transplant Technique
The SmartGraft Method
One of the biggest downsides to ARTAS is the restrictions when it comes to the type of patient it is suitable for. ARTAS can be used only on male patients who have straight, dark hair. Furthermore, the robotic system has not been approved for female patients and patients who have light-coloured hair or curly hair. Therefore, most patients turn to the SmartGraft method. Regardless of which method of FUE is performed, clients can resume their daily activities in just 1 or 2 days post-procedure. By having different options for a hair transplant procedure, we highly recommend not only doing your research between the options available, but also meeting with surgeons for a consultation to discuss all the available options.
Here at the Toronto Hair Clinic, we favour the manual FUE hair transplant technique using both NeoGraft and SmartGraft. At the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic, Dr. Torgerson analyses and assesses your scalp, hair growth, and hair texture to personalise your procedure and achieve the best possible results, as desired. When deciding between multiple methods, you want to analyze the potential results, scarring, precision, and time required.
