What is Scalp Micro Pigmentation?

Scalp micro pigmentation (SMP) is a hair restoration option that “tattoos” a semi-permanent ink onto the scalp. A shaved head gives the appearance of thousands of small dots on the scalp.

SMP aims to replicate this effect using pigments that are effectively tattooed. It can successfully help anyone suffering from male pattern baldness, alopecia, and can cover up previous hair transplant scars. It is a great option for giving more density in areas that are thinning, covering up bald spots, restoring the hairline, and for creating that “shaved look” for people who are semi- or completely bald.

Are You A Candidate for SMP?

Scalp Micropigmentation

Regardless of your skin complexion, the SMP colour matches the pigment to be used for clients with pale to dark skin tones. Whether you have red hair, blonde hair, or grey hair, scalp micropigmentation will benefit you. It will enhance fullness by reducing the contrast between your scalp and your hair colour.

Like all tattoos, SMP tends to fade over time. For the most part, the process requires 2 to 3 treatments spaced out at least 2 weeks apart to get the colour and shading just right. You will want a minimum 2-week interval between sessions so that your skin can exfoliate, although some patients absorb pigment differently.

Most clinics offer free touch-ups if any fading or blurring appears within the first year. To maintain the best possible look and quality, it is recommended to touch up the scalp every 2 to 5 years, depending on the patient and clinic. It will not damage your hair follicles, as the hair follicles are much deeper in the scalp than the pigment is placed.

How to Reduce Pain

Hair Restoration Procedure

As of today, the only medication that been proven to grow hair is Propecia and Rogaine. SMP is known to be far less painful than a traditional tattoo, but depending on your pain tolerance, you will still feel some discomfort. To make the process as comfortable as possible, ask your clinic if they offer local anaesthetic or light sedation for the duration of your procedure.

The first step is to schedule a consultation with a specialist. During your consultation, the procedure and pricing can be customized according to your needs. It is extremely important during your consultation that the practitioner or clinician fully understands your requirements and expectations. The most important considerations of patients should be the design, process, and recovery.

The extent to which SMP replicates real hair dots is quite amazing and realistic. By looking at previous patients’ before and after photos, it is easy to understand how scalp micropigmentation has grown in popularity so rapidly. As time moves forward, technology enhances and there are more solutions available for hair restoration. The SMP process is offered to both males and females.
