If you’re in your 30’s, you understand all too well the joys and sorrows of aging. Let’s be honest, most of us feel the bad outweighs the good in this particular decade. It seems like only a couple years ago everything was firm and wrinkle-free. Then one day you catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror (usually in the worst lighting!) and discover that things seem to have changed overnight. Bags under the eyes, maybe some crow’s-feet or a few grey hairs on your head. While some ladies are genetically blessed, in our thirties is when most of us start to see these changes.

Many women in their thirties are either going through pregnancy or have young children already. Motherhood, while wonderful and very rewarding, is also a guarantee of less sleep, less time for yourself, and possibly even poor diet choices due to time restriction and just sheer exhaustion! Or perhaps you’re a career woman (or both!) working long hours to climb that corporate ladder. Many factors in this busy decade take a toll on our faces and bodies.

So it’s no surprise that age creeps up on us, and we’re often too busy to notice until it hits us in the face. Add to that the growing societal pressure to look youthful, and you therefore may have found yourself doing some research into your options for reversing Old Man Time’s “work”. What can be done? Here are our top 3 suggestions:

Injectable Filler

Injectable filler is used to restore volume to the face, which naturally decreases with age. It can also be used to create contours (hello, cheekbones!) or fill in lines such as those around the mouth, called marionette lines. Filler is non-surgical and temporary, making it a great option for a refreshed, more youthful appearance.  Some other areas where filler is used are the lips, cheekbones, chin, and under the eyes.

Lip filler is one of the most popular treatments since plump, luscious lips have become more and more sought after in recent years (Think Kylie Jenner). Of course, many of us would prefer more subtle results, which is entirely possible too. One of the first places to get filler is in your lips. We’re sure that upon seeing the results as well as your before and after pictures, you’ll be hooked.

Suddenly you’ll find yourself buying lipsticks you would’ve never purchased before, because it’s fun to wear different colours now that you love your lips!

The next area to consider injectable filler in is under the eyes, often called the “tear troughs”.  For a lot of women in their 30s, the area will start to look a little sunken. You may notice the dreaded dark undereye circles. You may look tired, and the concealer you had used for years, which usually helped, just won’t be doing the trick anymore.   A lot of women feel they looked haggard (maybe a bit of a harsh assessment), but aren’t we our own worst critics? To correct those under-eye circles, doctors at our office used a product called Redensity II, and presto, the problem can be solved. The dark circles will be gone.

One of the cool things you may not know about Redensity II is that it contains light-reflecting properties to help with the dark under eye circles. This is an added bonus for sure, as so many women have dark, under-eye circles due to lack of sleep (which accompanies life with a newborn baby or a launching career).  If you’re like most people and therefore a bit nervous when it comes to needles, all of the injectable doctors at our clinic use topical freezing before your treatment. You can expect some bruising and swelling following a treatment with filler, but keep in mind that everyone reacts differently. Filler can last anywhere from 6 to 18 months, depending on where it’s injected on the face. It’s important to note that everyone metabolizes filler differently, meaning that how long your results last will vary based on each individual.

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments address a wide number of concerns, from acne scarring and sun spots to overall skin tone and skin tightening. Some laser treatments are a great option for people who are nervous or not quite ready to go under the knife. The Clinic at Yorkville’s CO2 laser treatment, for example, is the clinic’s most intense laser, but offers premium results. The CO2 treatment targets fine lines, sun spots, wrinkles, dark spots, and more.  Dr. Torgerson’s clinic prides itself on offering the latest and greatest in laser technology. The laser staff are highly trained and well versed in the technologies they offer.

The laser treatment we recommend here for women in their 30’s is the Fotona deep fractionated ablative resurfacing treatment, or “deep FRAC” for short. An ablative laser causes controlled damage to the skin, which (this may sound bad, but read on, it’s actually good!) causes the skin to react by producing healthier cells. Ablative laser causes your skin to produce collagen, which over time means improved firmness and texture.

Patients are asked to arrive at their appointment with a clean, makeup–free face. A topical freezing agent will be put on your face for about 15 minutes prior to the treatment. Protection will be placed over your eyes before the treatment begins, similar to the goggles you’d use in a tanning bed.

As far as pain, we would describe the treatment as uncomfortable, but certainly not unbearable. It’s like a hot “zapping”, with the laser handpiece moving slowly across the face. The laser staff provides all patients with a small hose, which blew nice cold air on the surface of the face, offering some relief from the heat of the treatment. Depending on the laser treatment you choose, there is the possibility of downtime, meaning that you may experience redness, dryness, and/or swelling following your treatment.

A deep FRAC laser treatment does involve downtime, meaning that your face will be red and very dry for 2 or 3 days afterwards. It feels like a sunburn, and you can applied Aquaphor to your face for the first couple of days. Detailed instructions on how to care for your skin after your treatment will be provided, and all patients are encouraged to phone or email if any questions or concerns pop up. On days 5 and 6 following your treatment, you’ll really start to see results and should be very pleased. What you may start noticing the most is a vastly improved overall tone to your skin as well as minimized pores. Most patients report that they started receiving compliments almost immediately. A lot of the laser patients were pleasantly shocked that they wouldn’t have to wear any makeup foundation anymore.

The many different types of lasers and what they do can become very confusing very quickly for most people, so we do highly recommend visiting Dr. Torgerson’s laser centre for a laser consultation. Then you can truly find out what is best for you. Another reason to have one of these approximately 30-minute appointments is because each laser treatment is very much tailored to the individual and their particular needs or concerns. A treatment plan can be discussed as well as what the cost will look like for you.

Fine line and wrinkle treatment

Our office also recommends that women in their 30s consider opting for a cosmetic injection* that helps improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles. The most common areas injected include between the brows (often called “glare lines”), around the eyes (crow’s-feet), and horizontal forehead creases.  This injection* blocks the nerve signals which cause muscles to contract. The effect is a relaxing and smoothing of lines and wrinkles caused by repetitive movements on the face. These areas tend to be where we notice fine lines first, making this cosmetic treatment the first procedure many people choose when they decide to take the leap into employing anti-aging measure- and the most popular non-surgical treatment in the world. You may want to consider this amazing injection if you feel that the lines between your eyes are causing you to look tired, angry, or worried at times when you’re not actually feeling any of these ways. You may also consider filler if there is some asymmetry to your face. The injections can correct this by relaxing a muscle.

Wrinkle Treatments Toronto - Dr. Cory Torgerson

If you’re not seeing fine lines yet but are dreading their arrival, these small injections can also be used as a preventative measure. At the Clinic at Yorkville, Dr. Torgerson choses to employ a team of only doctors (not nurses or medical aestheticians) to do wrinkle and fine line injections and dermal filler injections. The office is known as a training centre for other physicians and nurse injectors to learn about proper and innovative injection techniques for cosmetic procedures. Knowing this should help ease any fear or apprehension for patients who may be nervous or are trying these cosmetic injections for the first time. The Clinic at Yorkville injects by the area, rather than the unit. An example of one area would be crow’s-feet and another is the glare lines between the brows (also known as the “1” or the “11s”).  Approximately 25 units are injected into one area. The great thing is that Dr. Torgerson and his team guarantee your results, so if you’re not quite satisfied, they will top you up with a few more units to make the results perfect. Keep in mind that these cosmetic injections last approximately 3 to 4 months, so this is something you’ll need to upkeep.

*Health Canada regulations prohibit the use of this specific drug’s name when also discussing its benefits. If you would like to know the name of this particular cosmetic injection and learn more about it, please contact Dr. Torgerson’s office directly!

Long story short, Dr. Torgerson’s The Clinic at Yorkville is quickly becoming a one-stop-shop for all of your anti-aging and beauty needs, making it the place we recommend most for all you ladies in your 30’s still looking to feel confident and fresh!
