The Different Types Of Eyelid Surgery Techniques

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, rejuvenates the eye area by removing the excess skin and fatty tissue that cause hollowness and sagging skin.

People who pursue eyelid surgery often complain about looking tired with a sad appearance to their eye area. Because the skin of the eyes is extremely delicate, the signs of aging can be more pronounced in this area. Eyelid surgery can improve the overall appearance of the face by making the eyes look younger and more youthful with fewer wrinkles. There are different types of eyelid surgical procedures. However, the exact technique used is specific to your plastic surgeon. The method of surgery used is on a case-by-case basis. Eyelid surgery is a customized procedure that allows cosmetic plastic surgeons to aesthetically improve the shape and condition of the eye area. Below we discuss some of the common eyelid procedures.

Bilateral Blepharoplasty

This is a conventional eyelid surgery where the excess skin is excised and removed above and below the eyelids for complete rejuvenation of the eyes.

The procedure can also be performed as an independent surgery of only upper or lower eyelids. The scars heal to a thin fine line. This procedure is great for people who are experiencing sagging skin on the lids or lower lids with wrinkles and loose skin that they want to remove. Patients can expect about 10 to 14 days of downtime after a bilateral blepharoplasty or a lower blepharoplasty and about 7 to 10 days of recovery for an upper blepharoplasty.

Double Eyelid Surgery

Double-eyelid surgery is also a method of blepharoplasty. The technique used can be identified in the method performed in the surgery such as the following:

Full-Incision Double Eyelid Surgery

Full incision double-eyelid surgery is by far the most popular, and it is superior to other eyelid surgeries. Full incision double eyelid surgery is a popular choice for many due to its extended capability to enhance and modify the eyelids while addressing the signs of aging. Full-incision eyelid surgery produces permanent effects and can be applicable to all eye shapes.

Partial-Incision Double Eyelid Surgery

A partial incision double-eyelid surgery involves making minor incisions on the eyelid to remove excess adipose tissue and loose muscle tissue. The muscles are then tightened and sutured to create the new crease. The benefit of this procedure is the minimal scarring and procedural discomfort during and after treatment. Partial double eyelid surgery is more commonly performed in Asia.

Asian Eye-Widening

Epicanthoplasty

Epicanthoplasty, also known as inner corner eyelid surgery, is a common procedure that is performed in conjunction with a blepharoplasty. This surgery eliminates the epicanthal fold traditionally referred to as the Mongolian fold to help open up and widen the eyes. The inner part of the eyes are the most sensitive, so a facial cosmetic surgeon who is an expert in this procedure would qualify them to undertake such a delicate procedure.

Lateral Canthoplasty

Lateral canthoplasty, or outer corner eyelid surgery, is another eyelid surgery procedure that is often paired with a blepharoplasty. Outer-corner eyelid surgery is a high-risk procedure that can leave scarring if an expert in Asian eyelid surgery does not perform it. Korean plastic surgeons have proven to be the leading experts in this procedure. If you are considering enhancing your eye shape or size, be sure to consult with a leading expert who specializes in the field of facial plastic surgery and who has lots of experience in eyelid surgery. Communicating with your surgeon, seeing before and after images, and having realistic expectations is the best way to determine whether you would be a suitable candidate for eyelid surgery. Activities

Patients can expect to be able to go back to normal activities like reading, watching TV, and Web browsing after several days, usually 1 week after surgery.

Other activities like bending over and strenuous activities like lifting things should be avoided in the first 2 weeks after surgery. It is very important to reduce your risks of increasing your blood pressure in the first 2 weeks after surgery to minimize further risks of more bruising and swelling after surgery, which can delay healing.

Vision

Patients can expect to recuperate normal vision usually about 24 to 48 hours after surgery. Blurry vision immediately after surgery is normal and temporary as a result of the antibacterial ointment drops that are used after the procedure. Lubricating eye drops can also cause mild blurriness in the first few days after surgery. The eyes are not really impacted by a blepharoplasty procedure, because the surgery is only on the upper or lower eyelids, not on the actual eye. Patients can expect to see clearly and do regular activities like reading and watching TV a few days after surgery.

Stitches

Your plastic surgeon will strategically place internal or external stitches to help the incision marks heal. If you have non-dissolvable stitches, you are usually required to follow up with your surgeon after 5 days to have the stitches removed. Stitch removal is quick, and people can expect to feel minimal to no pain during the removal of stitches after eyelid surgery.

Exercise

Exercise after surgery is to be avoided for the first 3 weeks after surgery. Patients should relax and focus on recovering for the first 2 weeks after surgery. They can resume normal activities like walking after that 2-week period. Patients can resume aerobic activities usually 3 to 4 weeks after having surgery.

Eyelid Surgery

The technique used in the surgical procedure that minimizes trauma and preserves the eyelid tissue and muscles beneath the eyes ultimately determines how the recovery is after eyelid surgery. Patients with individual lifestyle factors like excessive alcohol and tobacco consumption or with medical conditions like diabetes can expect delayed healing. It is very important to disclose all medical conditions to your surgeon to maintain the highest level of safety for your eyelid surgery. A consultation with a certified facial cosmetic surgeon is the first step in discovering if you are ready for a blepharoplasty procedure.
