Eyelid Surgery & Under-Eye Filler
If you are concerned with the appearance of your eye area, you have probably heard of the two most common options for treating this delicate part of the face: eyelid surgery and under-eye filler.
These are both excellent options for treating the eye area, but one is most likely a better choice for you based on your needs. There are a couple of key factors and differences between both options that will help you, as a patient, decide on the best route to getting your desired results. Differences in the way the procedures are performed, the length of treatment results, the costs of each treatment, and the downtime are all important factors to consider when choosing the right path for you!
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a surgical procedure that is performed while the patient is under general anesthetic. Eyelid skin is tightened, excess skin is removed, and fat is either transferred or removed depending on the patient’s needs and facial anatomy.
Under eye filler is injected in office, and the treatment takes about 15 to 20 minutes. A hyaluronic acid gel is injected in the under-eye area to fill hollows and decrease shadowing. The most common and recommended product used in our office is Teosyal Redensity II.
The results from a blepharoplasty will last many years, as it is a surgical procedure. It is typically performed once.
The results from eyelid filler are not as long-lasting as surgery. The procedure will need to be performed approximately every 6 months to 1 year to keep up the results.
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure. Therefore, it is more costly than a single filler treatment. It should be noted that potential savings could exist, however, over time.
Conversely, under-eye filler costs significantly less than surgery per treatment.
After a blepharoplasty surgery, there is a significant period of downtime lasting anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks.Conversely, after a treatment of under eye filler, there is usually little to no downtime.
Both treatment routes are a great choice for eyelid concerns. The path you take depends on you! If you are willing to undergo surgery, wanting a more long-lasting result, willing to pay a larger sum over a shorter period of time, and you can take 1 to 3 weeks for the downtime period, then blepharoplasty surgery may be the right choice for you. If you are not willing to undergo surgery, are unsure/afraid of the permanency of surgery, are willing to come in for procedures every 6 months to 1 year to maintain results, and want a quick fix with little to no downtime, then an under-eye filler like Teosyal Redensity II may be the right choice for you.
Now you may have more of an idea about blepharoplasty and under-eye surgery and the prime differences between the two. Still, the best way to truly know what is optimal for you is to get the insight and opinion of a facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Cory Torgerson.
