Chin Augmentation
What is chin augmentation, and what are some specific details about it?
Chin augmentation is a procedure in which a weak or recessed chin is corrected to provide the face with better structure, more balance, and proportion. There are currently 2 top methods to correct an ill-defined chin. The first is chin implant surgery, which is considered a permanent solution. The second is using dermal fillers as a temporary, non-surgical solution.
A chin implant can dramatically improve the proportions of the face
chin augmentation implant
The first option, chin implant surgery, should be performed by a facial plastic surgeon. It is a simple and easy procedure from which the patient can recover relatively quickly and easily. The surgery itself involves the use of a properly sized Gore-Tex or silicone implant that is inserted through an incision at the base of the chin. The chin implant provides projection and just the right amount of width and height to create a more defined facial profile. The entire surgery from start to finish can be completed in about one hour and is not considered high risk.
Patients are sent home the same day as their chin surgery with a prescription for minor pain killers and antibiotics. The results are highly gratifying, and stitches placed at the incision site are removed in approximately 5 days. Most chin implant patients are ready to return to work within one week and find the recovery period easy to deal with.
Chin augmentation with the use of an implant is considered permanent, and the patient will not need any maintenance on it. If a patient is dissatisfied with the results of a chin augmentation, the implant can be easily removed, and the jaw line and chin area will simply return to its original genetic look. The need for removal is highly unlikely though, as most surgical patients who move forward with a chin implant are extremely happy and pleased with their augmentation results. A chin implant can dramatically improve the proportions of one’s face, creating balance, harmony, and symmetry of the facial features.
Injectable filler can be used to create a stronger profile
Dermal fillers
A second option for patients who are curious about chin augmentation and desiring a more defined chin but who are wary of chin implant surgery is dermal fillers. Injectable filler can be used to create a stronger profile, adding volume and contouring to the chin and jaw area where they were previously lacking. Dermal fillers are one of the top non-surgical, cosmetic treatments in the world today, and they have a wonderful safety record. In the hands of an expert injector such as a facial plastic surgeon, dermal filler can take just 10 to 15 minutes to be injected into the chin and jawline area, and the results are instantly visible.
In Canada, the approved majority of dermal fillers are made with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a component already created within our own bodies. Therefore, the risk of an allergic reaction or adverse sensitivity to this filler product is almost unheard of. The top product choices for dermal filler used for chin augmentation at our Toronto clinic are Teosyal, Juvéderm, and Restylane. These filler products last 6 to 9 months in the chin, so patients need to return for maintenance treatments only once or twice a year.
