Why Facial Cosmetic Procedures Are on the Rise Among Young Women These Days
Dermatologists in Canada have noted a significant change in their client’s demographics
Thanks to beauty trends inspired by celebrities like Kylie Jenner and pop music icons, more and more young women are pursuing facial cosmetic procedures such as dermal filler injections, rhinoplasty, and Botox. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently reported that requests for hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, neurotoxin injections, and chemical peels among female patients in their 20s have increased by almost 10%. While the majority of aesthetic patients were previously over 50, in recent years, the predominant age group represented at the plastic surgeon’s clinic has been women aged 28 to 33. The following factors explain the increased demand among young women for facial cosmetic procedures in Toronto.
Dermal fillers are on the rise for patients in their twenties and thirties
It is believed that many women who underwent cosmetic enhancement procedures in the past were aiming for subtle results, hoping not to draw attention and let their secret out. Today, young women are no longer ashamed of cosmetic enhancements. In fact, for millennials who idolize social media stars who flaunt their “Insta-perfect” features, cosmetic alterations are now an accepted and even revered step in their beauty routine. While their mothers may deny having had work done, many young female beauty bloggers make a living showing off their freshly altered features and talking about their experiences.
In fact, social media may have played a large role in this shift due to platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat, which layer beautifying filters on every face. The pressure is on for many young women who see these images daily. Social media has also raised the awareness of just what is attainable with cosmetic procedures. Rather than relying on filters to enhance their appearance, many young women are now achieving their desired look through the use of injectables, Botox, and facial surgery.
It’s a fashion statement
As a result of the influence of celebrities and online influencers, facial cosmetic procedures are now a fashion statement. Just as Kim Kardashian has inspired an increase in butt enhancement procedures, other stars have made petite noses, high cheekbones, and enlarged, pouty lips trendy. The effects of HA fillers and neurotoxin injections are temporary. However, surgical procedures that last a lifetime should be carefully considered and never done on a whim.

More disposable income
Another factor that seems to be influencing the upsurge of young clients is the increase in disposable income accessible to millennials. Approximately 23% of Generation Y have wealthy parents and can even be categorized as millionaires. This affluence allows many more women to undergo both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic enhancement procedures. For some women, neurotoxin and lip injections are even seen as a status symbol, much like a designer handbag, so the goal of appearing subtle is no longer desirable for them.
Young people who hope to achieve a certain look without the high price tag do raise a safety concern, however, as they may turn to discount, unqualified providers or perform “DIY” experiments such as the Kylie Jenner lip challenge, which distorts and bruises lips in an effort to enhance their size. Young girls who pay for discounted services run the risk of poor results at best or infections, scarring, and worse problems if the practitioners do not have the professional training required.
Although there are no age requirements for cosmetic treatments, it is recommended that patients wait until they are at least 18 before considering cosmetic enhancement treatments such as neurotoxin or lip injections because the face is still developing.
